The Tiger Trio operates at the velocity of joy, spinning cali soul-tinged improv, channels of Booker T, modest Fela Kuti bumps, and spiraling impressionist grooves. This is the return of the party band, all smiles and sweat and grind, Archie Bell and Ornette combined, with an occasional Cap’n Jazz yowl for go od measure. The Tiger Trio is Chris Brantley, drums; Jesse Levine, organ; Gary Pyskacek, bass.The Tiger Trio was born from wont of live dance music, experiments in motion and speed and improvisation. Pulling from contemporaries like !!! or 5iveStyle to heroes like the Upsetters, Booker T or ESG, the Tiger Trio tears and swings violently within a groove, jumping touchstones of melody towards rhythmic crescendo. There is an immediacy to their standard: the band planned to selfdestruct at the end of the year when Levine left for Canada -their shows are all-out sprints towards this release.
The Tiger Trio began when Gary Pyskacek (Pedal Steel Transmission, The Singleman Affair) and Jesse Levine (Angela Desveaux/Thrill Jockey, Black Ox Orchestar/Constellation) met as neighbors, and soon engaged each other in a musical conversation that would lead to a challenge: in one year flat, recruit drummer Chris Brantley (Pedal Steel Transmission) known for psychotic red-line endurance, fuel each other's vocabularies, immerse each other in ultimate party tracks like "Grazin' in the Grass" or "Tighten' Up", record a 12" for Cardboard Sangria in the fall, and die in a blaze of glory one year from the start, leaving nothing but a 12" vinyl corpse only the most adventurous of DJ’s would sample.
